Using your Claris® Software Express Updater - FileMaker® Pro 2.1v2
Overview
Thank you for investing in Claris software. From time to time, we produce maintenance releases of our software — we’ll add minor functionality, correct defects, or respond to customer requests. We’d like to make it as convenient as possible for you to obtain these new versions and enjoy their benefits.
Updates, in contrast to upgrades, contain few changes from the previous version. Instead of distributing the full, revised application, we can provide just the files necessary to incorporate the new functionality and fixes. When you run the accompanying Updater, it will combine your original FileMaker Pro 2.0 or 2.1v1 with the new changes to create a new application, FileMaker Pro version 2.1v2.
This document describes the steps you take to apply the update. You may want to print it out if this is the first update you’ve installed. A separate “Release Notes” file describes the changes and corrections we made in the new version of FileMaker Pro.
This update package consists of two components: an application updater for the FileMaker Pro application, and an installer for the updated Novell MacIPX™ 1.1 software if you are using MacIPX™ for your FileMaker Pro networking. The FileMaker Pro application updater is in the folder named FileMaker Pro 2.1v2 Updater. The MacIPX™ 1.1 software is in the folder named MacIPX™ Installer.
How to use the application updater:
1. If you have already updated your copy of FileMaker Pro with the 2.1v2 updater, and want to incorporate the latest version of the AppleTalk network file, simply copy the FileMaker Network file into the Claris folder inside the System Folder. If this is the first time you are using the 2.1v2 updater, skip to step 2.
2. Quit FileMaker Pro, if you’re using it.
3. Copy the FileMaker Pro 2.1v2 Updater into the same folder as your original FileMaker Pro application to make the application easy to locate when you start the update.
4. Double-click the FileMaker Pro 2.1v2 Updater. After you review the screen instructions, click OK to continue.
5. In the Updater dialog box, select your original FileMaker Pro application from the list of files and click Update. The Updater always leaves your original program untouched, in case something goes wrong with the installation.
6. The update should take less than five minutes. You see a message confirming successful installation of the new version, or an indication of what went wrong.
7. Click OK. You can now open the new version of FileMaker Pro to verify the update was successful. When you are satisfied with the result, delete the original application.
8. Copy the FileMaker Network file into the Claris folder which should be located inside your System Folder. If you are asked to replace a file with the same name, do so.
How to use the installer for MacIPX™ :
NOTE: Novell's MacIPX™ software is only necessary if you are on a Novell NetWare network and are sharing FileMaker Pro databases between computers running Windows and Macintoshes.
1. Open the folder named MacIPX™ Installer. Copy the contents of the MacIPX™ Workstation 1.1 folder to a blank disk. Name this disk “MacIPX™ Workstation 1.1”. The ™ character can be generated by typing option-2.
2. Restart your computer while holding down the shift key to temporarily turn off your system extensions.
3. Insert the disk named MacIPX™ Workstation 1.1, and double-click on the Installer to open it. After reviewing the screen instructions, click OK to continue.
4. We recommend that you click on the Install button to install all of the files MacIPX™ may need to operate properly. The Customize button may be used if you are certain of the specific network you are using.
5. Upon completion, click the Restart button to activate the updated MacIPX™ software. It is not necessary to hold down the shift key at this point. Error messages may indicate two possible problems. If the message asks you to “Please insert the disk: MacIPX™ Workstation 1.1”, make sure the installer disk is named “MacIPX™ Workstation 1.1”. If the message states that the disk contents are incorrect, make sure that the disk contains the contents of the MacIPX™ Workstation 1.1 folder, not the folder itself.
6. Copy the FileMaker Network file from the installer folder into the Claris folder which should be located inside your System Folder. If you are asked to replace a file with the same name, do so.
Technical Considerations
Hard Disk Space
You’ll need enough room for both the original application and the new version (approximately 2MB of disk space for both).
Virus Detection Software
The Updater makes several changes to the resources in FileMaker Pro. Many virus utilities consider this activity improper and may try to prevent it. To avoid this inconvenience, disable all virus detection software before applying the update.

The enclosed computer program is an update (the “Update”) to FileMaker Pro 2.0 or 2.1 (the “Software”). In order to use and/or copy the Update as authorized by this License, you must have validly licensed at least one copy of the Software. You are required to have a validly licensed copy of the Software for each copy of the Update made hereunder. The Update and the copies authorized herein replace your validly licensed copies of the Software and are not additional copies (i.e., you may not use the Update in addition to the Software the Update is replacing).
The Update is licensed, not sold, to you by Claris Corporation (“Claris”) for use only under the terms of this License, and Claris reserves any rights not expressly granted to you. You own the disk(s) on which the Update is recorded or fixed, but Claris and its licensers retain ownership of the Update itself.
1. License. This License allows you to (i) make copies of the Update, only up to the number of validly licensed copies of the Software in your possession and (ii) use each such authorized copy on a single computer at a time. You are required to have a validly licensed copy of the Software for each copy of the Update made hereunder. The Update and the copies authorized herein replace your validly licensed copies of the Software and are not additional copies. To “use” the Update means that the Update is either loaded in the temporary memory (i.e., RAM) of a computer or installed on the permanent memory of a computer (i.e., hard disk, CD ROM, etc.). You may use at one time as many copies of the Update as you have licenses for. You may install the Update on a common storage device shared by multiple computers, provided that if you have more computers having access to the common storage device than the number of licensed copies of the Update, you must have some software mechanism which locks-out any concurrent users in excess of the number of licensed copies of the Update (an additional License is not needed for the one copy of the Update stored on the common storage device accessed by multiple computers). If the Update is installed on the permanent memory of a single desktop computer (i.e., not a storage device shared by multiple computers) and that desktop computer is used by one individual for at least 80% of the time the computer is in use, that same individual may also use a copy of the Update on a portable or home computer.
The Update is protected by copyright law. As an express condition of this License, you must reproduce on each copy the Claris copyright notice and any other proprietary legends that were on the original copy supplied by Claris.
You may permanently transfer all your rights under this License to another party by providing to such party all copies of the Update licensed under this License, and the Software the Update replaces, together with a copy of this License and all written materials accompanying the Update, provided that the other party reads and agrees to accept the terms and conditions of this License.
2. Restrictions. The Update contains trade secrets in its human perceivable form and, to protect them, you may not REVERSE ENGINEER, DECOMPILE, DISASSEMBLE, OR OTHERWISE REDUCE THE UPDATE TO ANY HUMAN PERCEIVABLE FORM. YOU MAY NOT MODIFY, ADAPT, TRANSLATE, RENT, LEASE, LOAN, RESELL FOR PROFIT, OR CREATE DERIVATIVE WORKS BASED UPON THE UPDATE OR ANY PART THEREOF.
3. Termination. This License is effective until terminated. This License will terminate immediately without notice from Claris or judicial resolution if you fail to comply with any provision of this License. Upon such termination you must destroy the Update, all accompanying written materials, and all copies thereof. You may also terminate this License at any time by destroying the Update, all accompanying written materials and all copies thereof.
4. Export Law Assurances. You agree that neither the Update nor any direct product thereof is being or will be shipped, transferred or reexported, directly or indirectly, into any country prohibited by the United States Export Administration Act and the regulations thereunder or will be used for any purpose prohibited by the Act.
5. Limited Warranty and Disclaimer, Limitation of Remedies and Damages. YOU ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE UPDATE MAY NOT SATISFY ALL YOUR REQUIREMENTS OR BE FREE FROM DEFECTS. CLARIS WARRANTS THE DISKETTES ON WHICH THE UPDATE IS RECORDED TO BE FREE FROM DEFECTS IN MATERIALS AND WORKMANSHIP UNDER NORMAL USE FOR 90 DAYS FROM PURCHASE, BUT THE UPDATE AND ACCOMPANYING WRITTEN MATERIALS ARE LICENSED "AS IS." ALL IMPLIED WARRANTIES AND CONDITIONS (INCLUDING ANY IMPLIED WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE) ARE DISCLAIMED AS TO THE UPDATE AND ACCOMPANYING WRITTEN MATERIALS AND LIMITED TO 90 DAYS AS TO THE DISKETTES. YOUR EXCLUSIVE REMEDY FOR BREACH OF WARRANTY WILL BE THE REPLACEMENT OF THE DISKETTES OR REFUND OF THE PURCHASE PRICE. IN NO EVENT WILL CLARIS OR ITS DEVELOPERS, DIRECTORS, OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES OR AFFILIATES BE LIABLE TO YOU FOR ANY CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL OR INDIRECT DAMAGES (INCLUDING DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF BUSINESS PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF BUSINESS INFORMATION, AND THE LIKE), WHETHER FORESEEABLE OR UNFORESEEABLE, ARISING OUT OF THE USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE THE UPDATE OR ACCOMPANYING WRITTEN MATERIALS, REGARDLESS OF THE BASIS OF THE CLAIM AND EVEN IF CLARIS OR AN AUTHORIZED CLARIS REPRESENTATIVE HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.
Claris' liability to you for actual damages for any cause whatsoever, and regardless of the form of the action, will be limited to the greater of $500 or the money paid for the Update that caused the damages.
THE ABOVE LIMITATIONS WILL NOT APPLY IN CASE OF PERSONAL INJURY ONLY WHERE AND TO THE EXTENT THAT APPLICABLE LAW REQUIRES SUCH LIABILITY. BECAUSE SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF IMPLIED WARRANTIES OR LIABILITY FOR CONSEQUENTIAL OR INCIDENTAL DAMAGES, THE ABOVE LIMITATIONS MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.
6. General. This License will be construed under the laws of the State of California, except for that body of law dealing with conflicts of law. If any provision of this License shall be held by a court of competent jurisdiction to be contrary to law, that provision will be enforced to the maximum extent permissible, and the remaining provisions of this License will remain in full force and effect. If you are a U.S. Government end-user, this License of the Update conveys only "RESTRICTED RIGHTS," and its use, disclosure and duplication are subject to Federal Acquisition Regulations, 52.227-7013 (c) (1) (ii).
